AfPA’s Policy Priorities

The Alliance for Patient Access advocates on behalf of policies that prioritize a patient-centered system of health care. At the federal, state, regulatory and health plan level, AfPA and associated coalitions engage on policies that ensure patient access, limit patient cost and encourage patient choice.

Patient Access

Patient access serves as the core of AfPA’s mission. The goal is for patients to receive timely, appropriate treatment. This can be realized by reducing harmful utilization management, restrictive formularies and tactics that delay or deny patient care.

Patient Cost

Patients increasingly carry the financial burden of their health care. Programs like copay accumulators, copay maximizers and alternative funding programs drive a wedge in the clinician-patient relationship and make optimal treatment unaffordable. Addressing these programs is critical to ensure patients can access and afford the treatments they need.

Patient Choice

As medical innovation improves, policies must evolve to keep pace. More treatments, including cures, are becoming available, but patients need access to these options.
